Whether you’re hosting a Sunday brunch or craving a soothing night cap, this mocktail recipe brings all the fun and flavor with a gut healthy twist!

Why Kombucha?

I love all things ginger root, and GT’s Gingerade Kombucha is the pièce de résistance for this mojito mocktail! Kombucha is a probiotic beverage that improves digestion and restores balance to the healthy bacteria that live in our guts. It tastes slightly acidic, and is a naturally tangy effervescent made by fermenting sweet tea with SCOBY (Symbiotic Culture of Bacteria and Yeast). By adding ginger root to this mixture you’ll not only reap the digestive benefits of kombucha, but you’ll also indulge in the flavorful zing of spicy ginger root!

Alternatives to Ginger Kombucha

Although kombucha is considered a non-alcoholic beverage, it does contains small traces of alcohol – less than 0.5% ABV (alcohol by volume). If you’re looking to stay away from alcohol all together or if kombucha is not your cup of (fermented) tea there are a few alcohol-free alternatives you can swap for!

  • Ginger Beer: Try ginger beer if you’re looking to replace the ginger kombucha, but still experience a ginger-forward flavor. I absolutely love Fever Tree’s Ginger Beer! It’s so fresh and spicy, and it’s made with real ginger root, so you experience a more pronounced ginger flavor without the added flavors or extracts.
  • Ginger Ale: Ginger ale is another great alternative that’s not as pungent as ginger beer. Fever Tree has a Ginger Ale that I have yet to try, but if it’s as good as their ginger beer, you’re in for a real treat! You’ll want to look for ginger ales that contain ginger root and not ginger flavoring as this tends to have an artificial aftertaste.
  •  Ginger Seltzer: Reduce the sugar and the bold spice by opting for ginger seltzer or sparkling water. It doesn’t pack as much of a bite as the beer or ale, but if you’re looking to tone down the heat while still incorporate the bubbly persona, this is an excellent option!

Made With Simple Ingredients

This mocktail is made with the freshest ingredients, some of which you may already have on hand. They contribute bold, refreshing flavors with a gut healthy twist. These ingredients include,

  • Fresh Mint: The signature ingredient that defines a classic mojito. It brings a cool, herbaceous note that balances the sharp zing of the lime and ginger. Plus, it offers digestive relief by soothing cramps and discomfort.

  • Fresh Lime Juice: Cut through the ginger heat and kombucha tang by mixing in the citrusy flavor of fresh lime juice. Similar to lemons, limes contain vitamin C and citric acid which stimulates digestion – allowing the gut to absorb more nutrients

  • Fresh Ginger: Spice things up with some freshly grated ginger root! Ginger root is a zesty addition to this mocktail as it adds depth and subtle heat to compliment the tart flavor of the lime juice. It’s incredible for digestion in its raw form by increasing gastrointestinal movement and settling nausea.

  • Ginger Kombucha: Now this is the true star of the show when it comes to a gut healthy mocktail. By adding natural probiotic support with a pinch of tangy goodness, kombucha has all the flavor and digestive encouragement you could ask for in a refreshing beverage. Infused with ginger root, this kombucha reinforces the ginger flavor while mimicking the warmth of alcohol without the actual booze.
  • Lime and Mint Seltzer: Add a bit of fizz and flavor to this mojito by topping it off with lime and mint seltzer. This sparkling addition ties all the ingredients together, giving this mocktail a refreshing lift!

How to Make It: Step by Step

Making this ginger lime mojito mocktail right from home is super easy! Follow these simple steps and within minutes you’ll have the most refreshing gut healthy drink you could imagine!

Step 1 – Muddle the mint: Mint is the signature piece to any classic mojito recipe. Using a muddler helps to release the oil and accentuate the mints flavor and aroma. If you don’t have a muddler, clapping the leaves can work just as well. Clap a few leaves together in your hands, tear them into smaller pieces, and top them over ice.

Step 2 – Grate the Ginger: Using a fine grater or zester with small holes, grate a generous amount of ginger root. You can grate more or less depending on how spicy you want your mojito – then add it to your glass.

Step 3 – Adding the liquid ingredients: Fill your glass half way with ginger kombucha (or alternative) and the remaining half with lime-mint seltzer. Top off with a squeeze of fresh lime juice, give it a gentle stir, and that’s it – it’s that easy!

Ingredients

  • 1/2 inch grated ginger root

  • 1/2 cup ginger Kombucha

  • 1/2 cup lime-mint seltzer

Directions

  • Fill a tall glass with ice.

  • Grab your mint leaves and clap them between your hands 2-3 times to release the oils and aromatics. Tear them into small pieces and sprinkle them over the ice.

  • Using a grater, grate a generous amount of ginger root and add it to the glass. Be sure to grate over the glass to capture any juice or ginger that falls.

  • Fill the glass half way with ginger kombucha. Fill the rest of the way with lime-mint seltzer.

  • Top off with a big squeeze of fresh lime juice and give it a gentle stir.

  • Garnish with mint leaves, lime wheels, or fresh ginger and you're mocktail is now ready to enjoy!

    Thinking of Adding Some Spirits?

If mocktails aren’t your speed and you want to spice things up a bit, turn this mocktail into a cocktail with one of these spirits! Just keep in mind that too much alcohol could potentially kill off the good bacteria found in kombucha, and could defeat the digestive benefits of this probiotic.

    • White Rum: Keep this mojito traditional and add a shot of your favorite White Rum!
    • Vodka: For something smoother, opt for a shot of vodka. I recommend Tito’s Vodka as the flavor is very light, and it hides rather well in most mixed drinks.

    The Takeaway

Making a ginger lime mojito mocktail right from home has never been easier! And this vibrant drink won’t make you miss the alcohol one bit!

Follow the recipe below and enjoy this refreshing mocktail at your next back yard bash or for a solo happy hour!
